We’re more than your standard mental health practice – we offer:

Comprehensive Psychiatric Evaluation

An in-depth conversation with experts whose assessments consider root causes while gathering careful histories and performing targeted testing to co-create a flexible plan that can span multiple disciplines.

Psychotherapy

We draw from a range of evidence-based modalities, including specialized trauma treatments like EMDR and CPT – but we keep our approach flexible and eclectic so that sessions are shaped around you. Your therapist gets to know you, sees you, and designs the treatment accordingly.

Collaborative Medication Management

Guided by the evidence, but not limited by it – our clinicians listen deeply, communicate frequently, and prescribe meticulously, thoughtfully fine-tuning based on your experience.

Integrative Psychiatry

We look beyond symptoms and use integrative testing such as bloodwork, genetic testing, and nutritional assessments to understand the biological root causes that contribute to your wellbeing, not just to symptoms.

Treatment for Kids, Teens, & Families

Our specialization in the intersection of neurodevelopmental psychiatry, early intervention, and family systems allows us to work with kids, teens, and parents in a way that supports their mental health challenges from both a biological and social lens.

School & Workplace Accommodations

We advocate for your needs at school or work that might require documentation, including a medical or disability leave, 504, or IEP. Whether you come to us for these supports or we identify these needs later – we handle the clinical side so you can focus on getting the support you need.

FAQs for new clients

What does medication management at graymatters actually look like?

Our medication appointments are more comprehensive, more thorough, and more collaborative than what most people have experienced elsewhere. We talk about how you’re actually doing- sleep, energy, focus, mood, side effects, life context- not just whether a symptom score went up or down. We check in frequently, especially when starting or adjusting medication, and we’re reachable between sessions if something comes up. You’re not waiting six weeks in the dark wondering if what you’re feeling is normal. We treat you as the expert on your own experience- if something doesn’t feel right, we want to hear it, take it seriously, and adjust together. Whether you’re brand new to medication management and have a lot of questions or you’ve been through the assembly-line version and felt unseen and rushed – our approach is designed to meet you where you’re at and move at your pace.

What is Integrative Psychiatry?

Integrative psychiatry means we don’t stop at symptoms and prescriptions- we look at what’s happening in your body, not just your mind. We can incorporate lab work, nutritional assessment, genetic testing, and other biomedical tools to inform your treatment, looking at the biological factors that traditional psychiatry often overlooks. This isn’t a separate service you sign up for-  it’s built into how we think. When it’s clinically relevant, your provider can order labs, review bloodwork, assess nutritional status, or use genetic data to guide medication choices. It’s part of the same integrated, cross-disciplinary approach that runs through everything we do.

Is a psychiatric evaluation helpful even if I’m not interested in medication?

Absolutely. A psychiatric evaluation isn’t a commitment to medication – it’s a comprehensive look at cognitive functioning, emotional patterns, developmental history, medical factors, and lifestyle – it provides an understanding of how your brain works and what’s driving what you’re experiencing. Recommendations for the path forward after a psychiatric evaluation might include medication, but it might also include therapy, lifestyle changes, integrative approaches, or simply a framework for understanding yourself better. No pressure around medication, ever.

Do I have to do both therapy and medication?

No. Some folks see us just for medication, some just for therapy, and some for both. We offer both services within our practice – and sometimes with the same provider – because it enables us to meet our clients wherever they are in their mental health journey.

I have a mental health provider outside of your practice already - can I continue to work with them while also working with you?

Yes. You can continue to work with your current provider while also engaging in care with us! We often work and collaborate with outside providers, so we coordinate care to ensure that your treatment plan is as integrated as possible. However, if both your outside provider and a graymatters provider are prescribing meds for you – please discuss this further with the office/your graymatters provider, as it may be in your best interest to not have two prescribing providers.

Do you have in-person and virtual availability?

Yes. We offer both virtual and in-person sessions! Each provider has different availability for both, so if you have any specific needs/preferences, please let us know!

How does billing work at graymatters?

We are out-of-network, meaning we don’t bill insurance directly, but we do have a wide range of fees for services and options for financial assistance, and are committed to being flexible and trying to make things work for each of our prospective clients.

Do you have availability in the late afternoon/evening?

Yes. We offer late afternoon and evening appointments with many clinicians. Let us know what times work and we’ll match you accordingly.

Are ongoing in-person sessions required?

Not always, but there are situations where we may ask you to come in – including federal regulations related to controlled substances or clinical situations where your provider feels in-person care is important. If this comes up and it’s a barrier, talk to your provider and we’ll work through it.

Can I work with your practice if I don’t live in New York State?

While some of our providers are licensed in multiple states – our practice is based in New York City, so all our providers are licensed to practice in New York State If you live in a bordering state and/or have the ability to come in-person at least a few times a year – please speak to a Client Care Coordinator from our office to discuss further.

How soon can I expect to meet with someone?

In most cases, within a few days to a week-  especially with some flexibility with appointment times.

What to expect

Speak on the phone for an intro call

Chatting with a Client Care Coordinator for an intro call is one of the first steps to becoming a client with us. A Client Care Coordinator will answer your questions, help match you to a provider(s) at our practice, and then schedule your first session with them. Even after the intro call, Client Care Coordinators are here to support you in your care with us.

Connect with a provider

You’ll meet with a provider for an initial session, which we like to view as a casual conversation in which you’re getting to know each other. If you and your provider mutually feel that it’s a good fit, you’ll work together to co-create a treatment plan.

Support you in your mental health journey

We believe that mental health journies are not linear. Once you become a client with us – regardless of what may be going on, we are committed to collaborating with you throughout your mental health journey.
